Acute Back Pain
Acute back pain is pain that comes from or around the spine that has only been around for a short time. On this page we look at symptoms, causes and treatment options.
What is Acute Back Pain?
Acute back pain refers to pain involving your spine. What makes the back pain acute is the length of time that you have been experiencing the pain.
Pain has three categories according to the length of time you’ve been experiencing the problem:
- Acute (less than 3 months)
- Sub-acute (less than 6 months but more than 3 months)
- Chronic (longer than 6 months)
How do I get acute back pain?
Acute back pain usually begins when an injury to the local tissues and joints in the spine occurs. Pain is the body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. Sometimes the pain can only last seconds, typically feeling like a sharp or stabbing pain. In other cases, acute back pain can feel like a dull ache or a constant “nagging” type of pain or discomfort.
How do I treat acute back pain?
Acute back pain is generally not a serious condition. It will affect most adults at some point during their life. In most cases, the pain should subside within a couple of weeks. If the pain continues it might be worth seeking professional help.
